Strolling my dog down the streets in my neighborhood, I encountered one of my friends. Jose, as we all called him, is just 16 years old, and opted for smoking cigarettes. From parties and just weekends, he used to smoke three or four cigarettes in a night. Eventually, those became daily packs, and obviously he became addicted. Every time someone was talking to him, he would savor each one of those cigarettes. Since he was my good friend, and I haven’t seen him in a long time, because I’ve been busy with my school project, it was weird for me. While talking to each other, he didn’t draw out a cigarette to smoke. As enigmatic as that was, I broke the curiosity line, and I asked him.
“Are you still smoking?”
He smiled proud of himself, because he had quit. There were no words for him to express it. He gave me a message I will never forget.
“Smoking is a stage in our lives, we all encounter it. We all want to try everything as part of our experiences, but when it comes to smoking cigarettes, one has to be clever enough. I have seen how kids have glowing faces when they are smoking cigarettes, because it is like the best for them including me. Moreover, In the long term it is harmful for your health, and cancer has a better propensity for smokers than non-smokers. Anyway, I quit because I was diagnosed recently with Pneumonia, and the doctors told me that something weird had occurred in my cells, just after I was cured.”
I feel sorry for him, because he is that kind of person that wanted to live a life free of stress and depression. Today, I have learned a lesson that will move all of you.
It is safer and mature to not even think of smoking a cigarette, because It can affect us in the short term, and all youth are vibrant people who want to enjoy life.
