The time has come where everyone starts to decorate, buy presents, send letters to family and friends, eat with loved ones, and share the spirit of Christmas with every single person we care about and even to others. But, what exactly is the spirit of Christmas? The true meaning? Is it the food, the presents, the decorations? What or who dictates the meaning of such a known term, and, at the same time, so obscure.
It may seem silly to think that “Christmas is a sorrowful time”, but it is for some people. They may not have enough money to buy gifts for their children and family. They might not have the money and the time to share and prepare a meal for the family. Work may not let others enjoy Christmas as they would want. The quality family time might never come for some people.
If we take a religious approach to this issue, it is clear that we celebrate this time for the birth of Jesus. But, why celebrate the arrival of a person to this awful world full of sin and hate? Well, that it is exactly why we celebrate Jesus’ birth. Christians believe he gave his life to pay people´s sins on earth, so that everyone would have the opportunity to redeem themselves to the eyes of God. This only applies to the those who follow the Christian religion, since neither Muslims and Jews celebrate it. This because Jesus was supposed to be the Messiah or God’s chosen one to take the Jews in the path of salvation. Some Jews do not believe this, so Jews are still waiting for their Messiah. They simply don't believe in Jesus, therefore they don’t celebrate Christmas as the birth of Jesus.
Today, some people may follow the Christian religion and celebrate through that historic event. Others just hang on to the worldwide event and follow normal non-christian customs. Still, what is the meaning of Christmas for the non-Christian believers? Christmas has become a time more meaningful than just religion. It is a time where we reflect, think of others before ourselves, give to those that don’t have enough, think of all the family, share more time with the ones that most need it, those who feel alone. This is time where nothing matters more than those around you.
Having in mind all of these ideas, CIPLC wishes you and all your family and friends a merry merry Christmas!
