Such Pain, in Such a Small Insect
In the last few months, Venezuela has gone through an epidemic of mosquito-transmitted disease. The Chikungunya disease. This sickness was first experienced in Latin America in the islands of San Martin in the December 10th, 2013. It has made its way to Dominican Republic, and finally infected Venezuela. Nevertheless, there is no need to worry. The illness will not affect the whole population of the country. Still, there should be precautions taken by people.
Some precautions that people should have in mind are: try to go out with clothes that cover all the body; use bug spray every time you go outside; equip your homes with mosquito screen; and empty any pots with stagnated water since these are the environments that mosquitos like to live in and reproduce. Also, if a family member is diagnosed with the illness have them in quarantine. The sickness is not transmitted by humans, but if a non-infected mosquito bites the ill individual than that mosquito becomes infected. So, by preventing mosquitoes bites everyone can be safe. But what happens to the people that already have the disease?
Some symptoms of the disease are the following: headache, high fever, articulation pain, eruptions on the skin, muscular pain, tiredness, and nausea. Moreover, we have some people at CIPLC that have had the disease: Jesus Chersia, Quini Vega, Ms.Joslin, and Mr. St.Peter. Ms.Quini said, “ The disease left me really weak, and after a month I still feel articulation pains.” This disease is extremely strong and it takes away almost all the stamina, force, and will out of the individual.
Chikungunya is a virus and does not have any cure. Scientists are still working for a preventable vaccine, still many people are susceptible to the disease. According to the Venezuelan channel Globovision 8 out of 10 people have presented with the symptoms of Chikungunya. So, try preventing mosquitoes at home, and always be protected outside, because believe me it’s not something a person wants to go through.
