As we approach the end of 2014 we begin to anxiously await the scent of turkey, pan de jamon, hallacas and all the other great plates we have, and even though we don't think about it much, everything revolves around that great day on the 24th. Christmas is the true purpose of December, where we enjoy time with our families and share a sense of joy with those we love. I, like everyone else, enjoy this month immensely, but what other events have occurred throughout history that took place in December?
For example there are dates like Brownie Day on the 8th of December where people celebrate this exquisite dessert by enjoying a nice chocolate fudge; or the National Flashlight Day on the 23rd, celebrating its invention and acknowledging the fact that they exist, (not very important), but on the 7th is the anniversary of the Pearl Harbor attack.
Could you imagine living in a world where we only spoke in German? That would have been our reality if the “sleeping giant,” and the allies wouldn’t have acted on the Axis power. It is the anniversary of the beginning of a change on our planet. During this month Japan took action on the Americans by attacking Hawaii, and it’s a crucial date to be thought of during our month of pure joy. This is a time for us to remember those people who lost their lives not only at Pearl Harbor, but also during all WWII. Veterans today still feel deeply moved by the event that occurred 73 years ago! The day this heinous attack took place Roosevelt (the president of the U.S at the time) immediately went out and described the day as “a date which will live in infamy.”
The true essence of Christmas is remembering those who made a sacrifice indirectly for all of us. Let’s enjoy peace in their memories.
