Something has stolen the Christmas in Venezuela! But if it wasn't a thief, and it wasn't a green monster called the Grinch, then who or what was it?
"Every Who Down in Whoville Liked Christmas a lot...
But the Grinch,Who lived just north of Whoville, Did NOT!
The Grinch hated Christmas! The whole Christmas season!
Now, please don't ask why. No one quite knows the reason.
It could be his head wasn't screwed on just right.
It could be, perhaps, that his shoes were too tight.
But I think that the most likely reason of all,
May have been that his heart was two sizes too small."
As a senior that is eager and excited about moving on to college, this is probably my last Christmas in Venezuela. Christmas number 17 for me.
This season brings some of the most beautiful memories in my life; sharing with family, big dinners and tons of fun. However, this year feels different. This year it feels like a like Grinch-o came down from just north of Whoville to steal our Christmas.
Barely any houses are decorated with ornaments and lights, few families have set up their Christmas trees, and simply the Christmas spirit is gently fading.
I don't know if it is just my teenage cynicism or if all that I feel is true, but honestly, it is not the same.
Toys are extremely expensive to buy here, and that is if you can find any in the stores. Food and the ingredients are scarce and the gargantuan feasts that used to be made are more of a thing of the past.
There is no noteworthy atmosphere of celebration, unity, happiness, and peace, but rather a coldness (quite ironic since here we have Christmas at almost 30ºC).
I don't think there is a certain person to blame, even though some might. Therefore there is no actual Grinch, but rather the sensation of one that has attempt to steal the Christmas out of all of us here.
Nonetheless, we must reflect and change, just like Ebenezer Scrooge did, and realize that the Christmas spirit is within. Even if we are going through a low trough, we can still have the best Christmas ever!
The most important thing is to remain with family, surrounded by our beloved ones. Enjoy the company of each other and the fact that we can be together in this special date. Have fun, joke around, and appreciate the mutual love. For after all, that is the true meaning of Christmas!
