In all honesty, we all know airports can be annoying. If it’s not the security checks then it might be the delays or the long lines. Nevertheless, traveling can be a great experience, so it more than offsets even the worst airport scenario. Here are some tips to make coping with airports less of a hassle.

Before you go:
- Check in online: It turns out many airlines have offered this option for several years, but several passengers are unaware of this option. Most of the time passengers can check in up to 24 hours in advance to select seat assignments and print boarding passes, therefore reducing the time that would otherwise be spent in long lines. Passengers with only carry-on baggage can even proceed straight to airport security.
- Follow the packing rules: Be sure to know your airline’s weight and size restrictions for carry-ons and checked bags. Holiday flights are especially crowded, leaving less room for luggage. If you don’t follow the guidelines your carry-on might get checked at the gate, or far worse, you might have to pay a fee for a few extra kilos.
- Stay informed about delays: It’s a wise idea to check the provider’s website before heading to the airport. This way if there is a delay, you can save yourself time otherwise spent sitting at the terminal.
- Leave breathing room: Better be safe than sorry right? Getting to the airport with extra time is a good idea given the nature of the procedures you have to endure. Traffic jams, filled parking lots, crowds of travelers, endless lines, and other uncontrollable hassles can consume more time than you would predict. Having time to spare is probably better than rushing to the gate five minutes before take off.
- Dress appropriately: It is surprising how often airports are overheated. While you can’t do much about it, it’s wise to dress comfortably and light.
- Brace yourself for the long immigration lines: Again, there isn’t much you can do here. Nevertheless, be prepared with time killers. Bring a good book, a phone with battery, a tablet, or a games console. If you have one of those, time will fly faster than if you just stare at the ceiling wishing that people moved faster.
