Dreaming Across the Ages
by Jesus Guevara
It is big, it is majestic, it is simply a place where dreams come true. Yes! It is CIPLC… Wait, no that’s not what I was going to write about. Let’s try that again… It is big, it is majestic, a place where dreams come true, it is, you guessed it, Disney Land. A magic land where fairies lift giant boats with their dust, where heroes, pirates, and adventurers live happily and in harmony, and where all the little girls of the family can be crowned princesses. But the happiest place on earth didn’t just appear out of nowhere, no, its creation is the result of the many years of work of a man whose biggest wish was to share his beautiful imagination with the rest of the world. This man was called Walt Disney.
The company itself was not born until October 16, 1923, when Walt Disney along with a partner produced a small series of short films with animation and live action actors known as Alice Comedies. This was marked as the start of the Disney Brothers Studios. What most people don't know is that the first actual Disney cartoon was not with its current icon Mickey Mouse, but with a distant cousin of his known as Oswald the lucky rabbit. His one-shot episode called Trolley Troubles aired September 5 in 1927. It wasn't until a year later that the well known mouse was born in an episode known as Steamboat Willie, which showed Mickey sailing while a happy melody played in the back ground.
Then followed several years of success for the company and its happy founder. In 1930 they began selling their merchandise, which you might know as their adorable plushies, toys, and everything else relating with their famous characters. Slowly but powerfully, many other friends of Mickey started to appear on animated shorts and comics. Such as in June 9th, 1934 when the episode Little Hen was released, marking the first appearance of Mickey’s best friend Donald Duck. Several other comic strips, shorts, and episodes were released but a big step was achieved December 21st, 1937 when the first Disney movie Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs premiered and became the most famous and money producing film of its time. At the same time, Disney released a current fan-favorite movie called Fantasia in 1940.
Later on more achievement came when in July 17th, 1955 Disneyland, the very first Disney theme park opened in Anaheim, California to a selected audience who were specially invited. It was eventually opened to the public to let every single child experience the magic of Disney with their own two eyes. But they didn't stop there, Walt Disney wanted to bring more happiness to the world and began the construction of a new park in Orlando, later known as Magic Kingdom. But sadly before seeing the beautiful final result Walt Disney passed away December 15, 1966 at the age of 65.
Although he didn't live long enough to see how far his dreams have gone to this very day, Walt Disney lit the flame of hope, love, and happiness in the hearts of millions in his lifetime and even after decades he still continues to do so. Inspired by his actions, his brother took control of the company shortly after Disney’s passing and continues to expand it with several cartoons, and the gaming industry, all while constructing parks all around the world. Walt Disney may no longer be with us but his company as well as his legacy live on in the heart of every man, woman, or child who has seen his cartoons. And let’s be real who doesn't love Mickey Mouse?
