Ever wonder what EVAC is?
EVAC is something we hear of a lot about in the beginning of the year, but nobody really tells us what it really is. Teachers will tell you if you ask them that it’s a big meeting involving teachers and parents. OK, yeah, we already knew that but what is specifically IN it. What do you talk about? What are you all discussing that is so important to lose a day of school? They leave the identity of this event pretty broad and simple. Perhaps some of you already knew the details that happened in this occasion but for those who don’t know, allow me to tell you.
EVAC, to put it simply, is a conference which includes teachers, students and parents. They meet here to make small meetings in different classes about their own topics. Some can be about writing (which is mostly the focus of this year so it is reasonable to see a lot of that around), environmental issues and many possible community projects that can be put into action. There are little workshops that are created to help students and parents understand what they’ll be doing throughout the year and help them get more involved in their plans.
Teachers or the people that make these workshops (I don’t know if it’s only teachers that do this, maybe parents do them as well) want to improve the skills students have. Whatever is their focus, I entered into one that was motivating students and parents to get more involved into community projects, or do more projects in general for that matter. The idea is to help the people around the area, the environment, or to include others in small services--anything that will do something to help. They are looking for all of us to improve, to grow, and to develop ourselves into being more efficient and active as well as integrating us into doing more of these activities.
