As Valentine’s Day approaches, people all around the world start planning what they will do on that special day, which luckily falls on a Friday this year. Some will have romantic candlelight dinners with their significant others, some will spend the day with friends and family, while others might only stay at home alone. No matter where you fall in these categories, here are some movies that will help make your day even more special, or at least less lonely.
For those who will spend Valentine’s Day with their closest friends, the movie that would fit best would be a romantic comedy, or a chick flick (if you are all girls). Romantic comedies will not only add to the natural glow and romance that comes with this day, but will also add that hint of comedy to make the day a little brighter. Because let’s face it, you want your friends saying “awww”, not balling their eyes out.
A perfect fit would be: How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days
This movie is about Benjamin Barry, a part-time advertising executive and full-time ladies’ man who, to win a big campaign, bets that he can make a woman fall in love with him in 10 days. On the other hand, Andie Anderson is a writer for the “How to” section on “Composure” magazine. She is assigned to write an article on “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days”, and to do so she needs to actually experience it. Benjamin ends up being assigned to make Andie fall in love with him (randomly), and Andie is assigned to make him fall out of love with her (also randomly), both in 10 days.

For those that will spend the day with their families, the best type of movie would, of course, be a family movie. These movies will not only entertain everyone and get a good laugh out of them, but will also bring up the most important values in a family unit: friendship and trust.
A perfect fit would be: Shrek
This movie is about an ogre who, in order to regain his swamp, travels along with an annoying donkey in order to bring a princess to a scheming lord, wishing himself King. This movie does not only include action, but also romance and comedy. The action can be seen when Shrek and Donkey are in the search for the princess, fighting against dragons, the comedy in the overall script, and the romance between Shrek and the princess. It is a perfect family movie since it demonstrates that even the seemingly ugliest person can be one of the most gentle, honest and good people on the inside.

Now, if you are lucky enough to spend Valentine’s day with your special one, the situation changes. The perfect fit would probably be a full romantic movie, with obviously a hint of comedy (which all romantic movies have). But, the thing is that while women enjoy the cheesiness of the romantic, men might be bored by it. Therefore, a perfect movie would be one romantic enough to please the women, but not as cheesy to scare off the men.
A perfect fit would be: Crazy, Stupid Love
At 40-something, Cal Weaver is living the dream: job, nice house, kids and marriage to his high school sweetheart. But, when Cal learns that his wife has cheated on him and wants a divorce, his life unravels. Cal is taken on as a wingman to the handsome player Jacob Palmer. In an effort to help Cal get over his wife, Jacob opens Cal’s life to many options before him: flirty women, drinks and sense of style. This movie explains how romance works, the inevitability of destiny, and will definitely make everyone laugh.

If you are spending Valentine's Day by yourself, which is completely fine, there are many movies available to be your companion. It is difficult to escape romance on this day and in movies, since absolutely all movies have a little romance. The perfect fit would be really any movie. It depends on how you’re feeling that day. If you wanna’ have a good laugh, watch a comedy. If you’re feeling romantic, a romance. If you don’t want anything related to love, then you should probably stick with a thriller of a couple of seasons of Crime Scene Investigation (CSI).
