Depeche Mode – The Landscape Is Changing
Going back to the times when New Age music was at its peak, we travel back to an unpopular song by Synthpop experts Depeche Mode. We are talking about “The Landscape is Changing”, a song that works to raise awareness to mankind about taking care of our destroyed environment. The tune was included in 1983 album “Construction Time Again”. Even though the song was not a hit, it is worth recognizing it as a song that punches us with a message in a straightforward way.
The message is direct as there are no metaphors whatsoever. Dave Gahan, Martin Gore and Alan Wilder just give us a message of truth and taking care of our environment. The main verse of the song is “’Cause I don’t care if you are going nowhere, just take good care of the world”. They state here that we are humans, we live here, and therefore we ought to take care of this place. The musicians give us a deathly persuasion style asking if we can hear the mountains sighing and telling us the landscape is crying and suffering. They are complaining via music that a change should be done to avoid this “landscape change”.
If you do not like poppy sounds from the 80’s, I still think you would dig this thanks to the lyrics which are very direct and straightforward. In my opinion, if this song had been a primary hit in the charts in 1983, this message might have lasted. All music should be like this; if it was, I think a general change and revolution in the world might be seen. More awareness in music leads to more intelligence and education. Props to all the bands that communicate revolutionary messages with their lyrics and sounds.
