High-speed trains have been a new alternative for many trips, depending on the distance of the trip. The long distance trips are favorable to take on a plane, because the time is dramatically shorter than the train, but for shorter distances the train is better. The train will be faster if you count the immigration and all the hassle in the airport, which is minimal with trains. Another advantage to train travel is that the train tickets are less expensive than the ones of the planes.
The place where the decision becomes more of choice is when the travel is of medium length, because they might take around the same time. The plane might be faster, but less comfortable; where the train might take a little more time, but it will be more comfortable. On the train you will have availability of cellphone use, as well as internet use and you will have more space to move around than on the plane.
This is where your opinion of what you might prefer will come in, because you might choose a slightly faster but more expensive option which is the plane or you might choose the train that will be cheaper but takes a little bit more time. For example the ticket for a plane from Paris to Amsterdam is approximately 90 euros, whereas the one of the high-speed train is only 60 euros. The trip in the train is now an approximate of 3 hours and 18 minutes, and the one on the plane is 30 minutes, but without counting the hour to pass immigration, the half hour to leave the airport, and other outside transportation.
These facts show that the dispute between high-speed trains and planes is something that must be settled by opinion. The dispute will be about how much you value money, because by plane it might be 30-45 minutes less, but 30 euros more, that is where the you will decide which is better.
