Soccer For Them is a project that is intended to help people who have greater needs. These people are teenagers who are in a lower economic level than the kids in our school. This made the team of Antonio Morales, Edgar Gomez, Josu Egues and Pedro Rojas want to give them a dream. Their hope was that this might make them get off the streets and attempt to accomplish a dream-- soccer.
The teenagers who were helped were average kids; they did not do anything wrong, nor they were criminals, but they have a higher probability to get into bad habits, because in the teenage years, and with all the negative influence one might receive in the barrios, we guessed that these were the ones who needed the most help. To help these other adolescents, we played soccer and befriended them. We also gave them sporting goods so that they could play with what we gave them. We also donated money collected from our parents to a 17-year old who needed it because his mom was suffering from cancer and did not have enough money to pay for the chemotherapy. For our next set of donations our parents gave us money to sell lemonade at EVAC and all of the money we earned was given to his mother’s therapy.
It’s not just about money though, we give these players our time when we play soccer together. We hope to continue to work with these players and to expand our efforts to include an even larger group.
